If you have artistic skills, technical skills and ability to express ideas, this is the right field for you. In areas like cinematography, sound engineering and editing, professional training is essential. There are several universities and institutions that offer training in these areas. Even for acting and directing, which are basically creative fields that require inherent talent; training helps to hone the skills.

If you really want to weave your dream work on the movie screen you should understand that the real world of filmmaking involves plenty of hard work, creativity and challenges.

Qualifications

There are Diploma, Post Diploma and even Certificate courses in each area of specialization. Specializations areas include production, direction, editing, cinematography, film processing, animation, acting, sound engineering, make up, photography and so on.

Formal training in filmmaking makes it easier to understand the technical aspects of filmmaking and converting them into action. A course imparts the theories and practical knowledge of the hardware and software needed to make a film. An aspirant filmmaker is taught all aspects of filmmaking be it direction, cinematography, editing, audiography, productions to the post-production phases of moviemaking.

Skills

To be successful in this field one needs to have a creative mind, artistic flair, good people skills, sense of responsibility, ability to work under pressure, great physical stamina, strong visual sense and good communication skills.

If one wants to be a director or producer he also needs to have leadership qualities, ability to bring out talent in others, creative instincts as well as managerial and administrative abilities. Careful planning is essential on the script front because if you don't have a thorough script the confusion may carry on to the shooting floor and eventually the final film is short of mark.

Career Options

There is a lot of scope for employment in the field of cinema. This is a highly competitive field, where one has to keep putting in maximum efforts to even remain where one began. This is a field where talent, contact and business acumen spell doom or success. There are job opportunities galore in film studios, production companies, editing studios, processing laboratories and government departments that make films, besides film departments of advertising agencies.

One may learn by making one's own film and learning through mistakes. It's best to start off by making short films. Or if you can work as an assistant director for someone it is a very cheap way to learn, as you don't have to join an expensive filmmaking course instead. You'll get to be on a film set, observe and learn. Besides a lot of direction is intuitive.

In feature film production, obtaining qualifications is no guarantee of employment. Entry in the film industry is largely haphazard. Only those with flair, perseverance, networking skills and the right connections find it easy to get opportunities to prove themselves time and again.

Remuneration

Earnings of workers in the motion picture production and distribution industry vary, depending on experience, type of work, union affiliation, and duration of employment. Salaries for directors vary widely. Producers seldom get a set salary; instead, they get a percentage of a show's earnings or ticket sales. Once your talent is recognized, when your film succeeds or gets wide acclamation, money begins to pour in.
