Work Experience and its Importance

Introduction

Work experience in your CV accounts for a lot. If this section of your CV is glaringly empty then the employers will be skeptical about whether you have the required skills that they are searching for. The academic qualifications stand for a lot but to prove your mettle you need to show some work experience too.

The work experience is unlike anything that happened in school. That time probably a stint in the summer holidays at your dad’s store was probably the idea of work experience. However at a more professional level work experience can be wide ranging depending upon the field that you choose to work for.

Gap years are common with students who have just graduated and wish to take a break before settling down in a career. This gap year can be very usefully spent instead of being whiled away in front of the television set. If you like to travel then you could use this to work in other countries just for experience sake and this will count a lot for your CV.

There is also a placement scheme in some organizations that hire employees for specific projects and this could prove as a worthy work experience for some of the people as there are flexible working hours in such projects. Vacation placements are also a good option to gain some easy work experience.

Internships are another concept that is on the rise and is more related to the field of IT, banking and finance. This is an offer that is simply too good for some people who wish to take them up in between their final year and penultimate year. This is essentially good because nearly 70% of the interns receive placement with the same company based on their work quality.

Degree courses also offer industrial placements which are between your first and second year and the final year. The candidate is paid a healthy wage. Voluntary work is another very easily available opportunity of work experience; this is because, here you can choose the activity depending upon your flair and potential and also display your skills and benevolence through them.

Small and medium sized enterprises or SMEs are another way of gaining work experience in an office atmosphere. They also reflect the responsibility that you can handle and also the ability to manage yourself well. Casual and part time work can also count for your work experience, because work experience need not be only coming with a tag. Work done during the university years can help you both in gaining some money along with valuable experience that will help you in your career later.
