DJ is a Disc Jockey, who makes use of several disks (earlier it was vinyl tapes) to create an exceptional music. A DJ has to create something out of the world, to take the audience to its high and give them a great time. DJing is growing at a very fast pace in India. From local pubs, bars, and parties to big functions and the music industry – the scope is tremendous everywhere. The young and old partying crowd needs them.
What is DJing?
DJing is about music: making music out of music. If you love music, if you love playing with music, and you enjoy mixing different music to create a single genre, then this is the right option to chosse. Apart from a deep passion for music, the basic equipment you need is:
- A pair of turntables and/or a pair of CD decks (you can also use a multiple CD deck),
- A headphone,
- A mixer with a minimum of two channels,
- One or more amplifiers and a set of speakers,
- Records and CDs,
- A recorder (You can also use your computer as a recorder), and,
- A synthesizer (optional, in case you want to enhance the music).
What Else Is Required?
Nothing at all is the answer. Once you learn how to manipulate the tracks and get the grip of mixing, you can develop your own style in terms of both choice of records and style of mixing. There are no hard and fast rules. All it requires is you, your equipment, and your skills to handle the audience using the equipment. It is not preferable to stick to a single genre, change the genres very frequently to keep the audience engaged.
How to Get the Grip of Mixing?
DJing involves smooth transition from one record to another. As the first record is playing, you have to keep an eye on the second and find the first beat from where the latter will begin playing. Though this may be practiced by self, there are several institutes that offer training, especially for the transition part. You have to be very keen while listening as your mind would be diverted on the record currently playing. These training institutes help you catch the trick using some extra equipment such as a VU meter where you can watch the music beats as well. Moreover, this involves creating and using CUE points, using pitch bending and a whole lot to get a total experience of DJing.
Where Do You Find Good Institutes For Training?
There are many training centers for DJ mixing. Some of them are owned by practicing DJs. A list of such centers is given below:
- DJ Surr's Splinter's DJ School, Mumbai,
- DJ Nasha's Workstation, Mumbai,
- Live Wire's Career, Mumbai,
- DJ Suketu's Audio Elite, Mumbai, and,
- DJ Kedar's Academy, Mumbai.
Precautions:
One of the problems that DJs face is prolonged use of headphones as part of their work. This may cause ear damage. So, please make sure that the volume of your headphone is set to a comfortable level where you can listen to the beats as well as protect your ears.
