Termination from Job – How to avoid this Humiliation

Being fired from your job is an awful experience. And not knowing the exact reason behind it is even worse for your career growth.

The causal reasons behind you being fired can be many. And it is only logical to realize these reasons so that you are not left clueless when this particular issue gets raised in your next job interview.

Use this list underneath to realize the reason behind why you might have been fired. And also read through it to avoid such consequences for your present job.

But always remember, it is not always possible to take action and safeguard your job. If you can, then it is good enough.

Understanding the Reasons:

  1. Irregular attendance and/or below the level job output: Getting caught in the wrong job is a foremost reason why some people cannot perform well in their job. Poor attendance is bound to show up in such cases. If you realise such symptoms, it is time you accept them and take a step to act on them.

  2. Office politics: Even political issues can cost you your job. It is wise to sense them and play along the lines. It is not uncommon to see employees being fired just because the new manager wants to hire his ex- colleagues in the new company!

  3. Corporate downsizing: This means that you are fired after being told that the company is eliminating this job. But it is not always the real reason, many times new people are hired with same or a similar job profile.

  4. Inappropriate work ethics: There can be many examples of inappropriate behaviour but the common ones usually are employee being dishonest who lies and steals from the company, or sexually harasses co- workers, some companies abstain from even office affairs, or if the office resources are being used for personal use. Using office internet connection to watch objectionable websites or even using it in excess for work other than official can cost you the job, if the company's policy mentions it. The list can go on but ultimately what decides your fate is how severe the offence is and whether your employer is ready to forgive or not.

  5. Your contract is not renewed: It can be due to varying reasons such as your job profile no longer being required or to slash down the budgets. Though it looks like as bad as getting fired, it actually does not mean the same.

  6. Ego Clashes: It is good if you find yourself amongst like- minded people. If it is not so and you face frequent personality clashes with your employee or co- workers, then you are not lucky enough.

  7. No reason stated: It is also possible that the boss does not state and hide the real reason behind you being fired mostly so as not to lay the blame on himself. Or if looked from the other side, it might be so that the employer does not want to confess the real cause.

Avoiding the Reasons:

Being aware of your company's policies regarding varying issues such as expected work conduct, internet usage, hours of work and attendance is always a good idea. Don't play dumb by acting ignorant. Act according to what is sensible to do. And getting regular unbiased performance reviews from your employer can make you aware of your shortcomings which can then be worked upon.
