What is the right way to quit your Job?

Introduction

You have had a stressful time hunting for that perfect job. Now that you have it you are over the moon and just can’t stop thinking of what color your new cabin will be. Relax, if you have quit your job, it doesn’t meant that you shouldn’t be bothered about what people will think about you in your now ex- office.

If you wish to erase out every accomplishment you have made ever since you took up this job, then let your departure be as strategic and deliberate as your arrival had been. This involves with your resignation process. You can’t under any circumstance let on in your present office that you’ll be leaving shortly until you have signed an agreement with your new employer.

If you keep blabbing about it and the job offer falls through then you’ll have egg on your face and probably your boss will be ready to fire you any moment. Following are few steps that will keep the exit smooth for you.

  • Inform your superior first - It’s the best way that your superior should hear the news form you first rather than from any one else in the mouth.
  • Give a Two Week Notice - This is the ethical way to do it and you should stay for the complete period until asked by the company to do otherwise.
  • Don’t be chatting incessantly and bragging about your new gig.
  • Do not have an insulting attitude towards anything or anyone.
  • You should stay on top of your responsibilities and remember you are responsible till the 5 PM of the last day.
  • You should adhere to the protocol; leave behind an impression in your office.
  • You should also thoroughly review the employee handbook to find out what all you are entitled to.
  • Organizing the files that you were dealing with is a must since it should be easy for your colleagues to delegate the work handled by you and not require calling you at your new work place.
  • Train the individual well who will be your replacement . You owe this much to people who have helped sustain you for some time.
  • You should not take office supplies and any other work product developed by a team and not just you alone.

Companies at times ask employees those who are leaving to a sort of exit interview with the HR. here you will be asked to talk about your experiences with the firm and why have you chosen to leave etc. Remember before answering that the person questioning you doesn’t even know you well. So follow the policy of interviews that if you don’t have anything nice to say then you should lie.

You should remain as business like and official as possible and refrain from giving into the temptation of bad mouthing the difficult personalities of the concern. The risk of offending people is too great to be played with. Even if you dish out any constructive criticism then tread carefully.

Don’t take things for granted and never offend people. What if you don’t like your new job and would like to come back sometime? You also need references for future concerns too, so you need to have someone whom you can count upon. During the last weeks keep your negativity to the minimum and hide your grudges, act like a team player no matter what. Leave behind a sparkling clean reputation.

Last but not the least if your colleagues take you out for lunch or give you a farewell party, congratulate yourself that you have done well to have a smooth departure.
