Career options in Film and Television Industry
The obvious career option that strikes one's mind when one thinks of the film and television industry is acting. Actors are the one who get most of the recognition, most of the time on somebody else's behalf. But still you need to have something in you that spark, that zing, that charisma that puts you at a comfortable place as an actor. Not just the acting talent, but also the right connections are important. Developing a fan following is no easy job. Not many get to enjoy that.
Then there are the technical jobs of writers, directors and producers. Unlike acting, these require an educative background. But exceptions are there to every rule. History has shown writers that have outdone such circumstances with sheer talent. There have been directors who have developed their own distinctive movie sense without formally learning it. And the producers do not require much except the money.
Writers are usually from diverse background. Your job is almost done once you are able to get your work recognized. The flow gets easier once one becomes famous.
The job of a director is considered the hardest amongst all of these jobs. Rightly called, he is the director of the ship. His job is to coordinate the work of thousands of people working under him. Then only a fruitful end product is obtained in the form of a film. Besides the basic technical know- how regarding film making, what is also required is your own distinctive style. A film should have a life of its own which can have an influence over its audience. Some condensed learning such as broadcasting helps in honing your skills. Networking is mandatory.
Producer's job is much easier. He is as good as the money he has and how well he utilizes it. He can work through a production company or independently. Producing independently gives you the option of making movies the way you want it, you can set your own standards, you have a right to intervene at every stage of the film, and most importantly you can cash in on all the money collections that follow.
These four jobs of acting, writing, directing, and producing, though are the foremost ones, but they require utmost talent and perseverance to be able to make a mark. Thousands of people try to get a hold of it, but only a few can succeed and sustain themselves throughout.
Then there are jobs that require a technical background such as in special effects which is growing as a field. It is a job with a right mixture of creativity and technical knowledge. Not everyone can become a special effect expert. Companies that hire work on assignment basis also can cater to special effects other than just computer generated ones such as miniatures and animatronics. They can anytime look more realistic. It again requires an engineering background.
Films require sets and costume designs. Almost all television shows are made on sets instead of real locations. Set and costume designing is a work of art and aesthetics. Designers need to have that skill of creating an ambience consonant with the director's vision and the script's demand. They need to have that ability to explain it to those who are actually making the set. Their skill has to be in looking for details to generate a product that appeals as a whole.
Besides there are other jobs also such as photography, animation, music production, advertising and promotions, casting, locations, screenplay, make up, hair, and food service etc. Thus all in all it is a field that has something for all.
