Is TV news your Career Option?

Everyday Life

World does not stop acting if it is somebody's day off. News is something which is happening all the time. Thus television journalists do not really have a choice over an assured vacation. Often are birthdays and anniversaries missed, with personal life taking a back seat.

But it also needs to be recognized that everyday comes a novel situation. Thus life can never get dull as one gets to meet exciting people and know newer ideas. Varied issues are covered ranging from a court case one day to a food chain's review the very other day.

It is a known fact that Television News does not pay well at least in the start. Mostly people who join it are driven by their personal motivation of making a difference. But it is not that money never comes. It definitely does if you show perseverance and make a mark for yourself which is true for every field nowadays. It is just that it takes a little longer here.

Traveling is something that is synonymous with Television News. For the fresher in this field, most of the time it becomes possible to bag only a low- paying, small market job as the first venture. But if one needs a better monetary assurance, then one has little choice than moving around the country and entering bigger markets. This approach works well for people who want to directly face the camera. For others too who work backstage, this strategy of moving to larger markets can work and they anytime have better opportunities too. If you cannot handle the diversity of living in places such as Paducah and Kentucky, then Television News is not a wise career option for you.

Abilities & Qualities Required

Perseverance: Being persistent can also show up as being frustrating to others if the fine line between the two gets crossed. A good reporter should know when their spirit of pursuit can become irritating for the other. One has to be highly patient, pursuable, and negotiable before one can get an exclusive coverage or that “very big” interview. But mostly reporters forget their limits under the pressure of competition and end up forcing people to tell stories which they are not willing to share.

Viewpoint: Mostly editors, reporters, assignment reporters, producers, or the photographers are so deeply immersed in finding the details of a story, that they forget the real reason, the “larger picture”, behind covering news. It is always beneficial to keep a track of the real scenario. The newscast, the final outcome gets possible only due to the efforts of each and every team member.

It is the job of the assignment editor to prioritize the news based on the resources that one has. Managing the sequence of flow of news items is the producer's work. For reporters, it is important to provide the news the way it is, without prejudiced notions attached.

Art of Storytelling: Gathering facts and telling only the details of a story does not sound very appealing to the viewer. A good reporter tells the story to people in the way they understand, in an interesting manner.

Presentation Skills: A good reporter should have an eye for detail. It requires a certain aesthetic sense to be able to convey their report through a visual medium in an appealing manner.

Communication Skills: It is something which is an obvious requirement in the field of reporting. For on-air broadcasters, clarity and fluidity of their speech are must besides influential writing skills. Producers should work on a writing style that is precise and appealing at the same time.
