Introduction
ERP stands for Enterprise Resource Planning. It is simply a way to integrate the data and processes of an organization into one single system. Generally, an organization have many different departments and each department have its own set of processes and practices and information which are available to their own people only through their databases or systems. ERP helps to integrate all these systems and databases together to form one cohesive unit or store house of data which is available to all people. Usually ERP systems has many components including hardware and software, in order to achieve integration. ERP ahs become a very popular tool today and many companies – big or small are opting to implement it in their systems. It is important because it helps to link together various processes and departments of the organization in such a way that in acse of any internal or external changes, these may be able to adjust accordingly.
A software system is considered ERP, when it provides an organization with functionality for two or more systems. Today's ERP systems cover a wide range of functions such as Human Resources, Supply Chain Management, Customer Relations Management, Financials, Manufacturing functions and Warehouse Management functions and integrate them into one unified database.

ERP Implementation takes a lot of planning and consulting and takes a lot of time in complete implementation. Implementing an ERP system requires significant changes on staff and work practices as well as setting up of hardware infrastructure for support services. The ERP is a powerful computer application, which involves the effective utilization of manpower, material, plant & machinery and finances. Major companies, which are providing ERP software and solutions are, SAP AG, Baan, People Soft, Oracle and J. D. Edwards.
Training and Job Prospects:
ERP professionals are in great demand today as more and more companies are opting for ERP implementation. There is no specific degree requirement for an ERP professional. Anyone from any fields like computer programming, engineering, materials management, costing, accounting, production planning, sales and service, can become an ERP professional. The persons have an option for going into ERP Development or ERP implementation. Consultants such as PwC, Anderson, KPMG are certified by the software providers for developing the system in client companies. Thus one can enter this field by joining such consultant companies or alternatively, they can go for training in package providers like SAP, PeopleSoft, Oracle and Baan.
Some organizations, which are offering career in ERP implementation, are IBM, SISL and Tata Technologies. To become an ERP consultant, a person should have experience in any one or more of the fields such as accounts, costing, sales, distribution, production, purchase and personnel management. In the development area, a person should be proficient in programming languages like Visual basic, C, C++ or Java. Besides, he should have orientation towards project and development related tasks, and have good communication and leadership skills. A basic degree in engineering or MBA< CA etc. is an essential qualification.
